Ghost

All about Ghost - Few Spot Knabstrupper stallion

Ghost

Postby Sarah on Sat Jan 12, 2008 9:43 am

Ghost will be standing at stud this year for the first time so i thought I'd post a few words about him that isn't in the stud card or on the stallion websites!

So his details and stats are pretty straightforward - graded by ECHA, 15.3 - should mature 16hh - 3 year old few spot knabstrupper stallion. I would love to be able to say this means her will 100% guarentee spotted foals - however I bred a foal this year by a few spot stallion who apparently threw 100% spotted foals - and I have to say that despite much searching, Bonita remains as black as night with no spots to her name whatsoever! Although I remain hopeful she may roan out at some point...

So he SHOULD guarentee spots...

He will be covering several of our mares this year to gage an idea of the stock he throws so we eagerly await their arrival!

But first things first - we plan to have him trained to collect with an AV - meaning we can offer AI to mare owners - so watch this space for more updates on that. He will definitely be available va natural cover and hopefully via AI too

As well as being a superb type and having a scopey jump on him Ghost really does have the most wonderful temperament, I honestly don't think I have ever seen such a gentle and laidback stallion - or possibly any horse!!

So that's a few words on our Ghostly boy - we will be getting some more pictures of him when he has lost his winter woolies

Thanks Sarah! His temperament is one of the first things most people comment on (that, and how on earth will we keep him clean!) and it's why I love working with him - he's such an amenable chap :D

So amenable in fact that today when he came in to the yard (first time in to the yard since he was turfed out for the winter in October) we decided to see what his reaction to a saddle would be...

I have attached a piccie of him after we walked round the yard several times... not looking quite so clean after wintering out all winter!Image

Excuse the wellies - it was a bit impromptu...

I definately think I'd like to use ghost this year, temperment is upmost importance and sexy looks are always a bonus- thats if you'll let him breed with a scruffy old thoroughbred mare!! (she does have good breeding and performance record but currently looks hideous in her wooly mammoth coat and with no more muscle now she is a retiree!).

I think any horse doesn't look their best at this time of the year so we'll let her off! And I think Ghost would cross particularly well with TBs and TB types. He will be covering 2 or 3 of my Trakehner mares this year as well... how sad am I that I am getting excited about that already!

Sarah, Billy has had a lot more handling than Ghost so I'm sure you'll have no problems backing him at all! :) Then you'll be able to wipe the board in the ridden classes as well as the inhand ones!

Paul - you always say nice things about my little man

Sue you really have to meet him to appreciate just how laid back he is - practically horizontal in fact! But with my young mini beasts (my daughters! ) around I wouldn't feel happy if any of the horses here, let along the stallions had any nastiness in them!

Thanks Kate - it'll be nice in a couple of weeks time when he's in a close field and I can work with him more regularly...

He'll be fine! How exciting though - and how funny that I have known you for so loong - I remember him as a foal!!

It's nice having Stef working here now - she has no fear unlike me so is quite happy backing the Babies - and it means I can stand back and watch with the video ready for my £250 You've Been Framed clip!
