How big are your Foaling Boxes?

Postby Whitewood on Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:56 pm

As title really - how big are your foaling boxes?

Is there an ideal size, do you prefer to foal out when the weather is better?

currently a pretty standard 15 x 15 which was fine.

Last time it was 2 small boxes knocked into one making 20 x 10 - very odd, except when Dexter had to be pulled out of a standing horse it was ideal for one lot to be pulling at one end whilst the others pulled at the other end (bit like a christmas cracker)

Only had 3 foals but after one going so badly wrong, personally would never consider an outside foaling if avoidable.

Woody foaled in a 16 x 12 box which was fine for her (she is a big 16hh) I wouldnt consider foaling outside if I had the option of them being in. We watche Woody on a webcam and without our assistance things may well have not had the happy ending that they did.

Ours foal down in a barn, not sure of the eact dimensions but lots of room. Considering using the 30ft round pen (indoors) this year too.

If one of our mares decided to foal outside during the day that would be fine but I wouldn't have them out at night if they looked close to foaling. I just think when it goes wrong, it goes wrong very quickly and its easier to have them in, dry and near to electricity in that case!

We have two big barns. One mare in each as I type.
I have been told many times by different vets if you have clean, safe lit pasture it is better to foal outside. :D
