Not content with giving me a fright once Magic gave me the absolute shock of my life on Bank Holiday Monday.  .... There I was loving the weather recovering from a very drunk BH sunday when I got a phonecall from one of the girls down the Yard!
Magic was down again and they couldn't get him up, he just kept flopping back down, :( :( :( so again I raced down the yard and found my baby led flat out (in a ditch) ran up to him and burst into tears straight away when I saw him, He looked like he had gone....
His eyes were glazed over and his breathing very shallow, we managed to roll him up a few times (during which he felt was a great moment to have a little snack of the grass! :? ) but everytime we did he was on his knees and unable to get them out from under himself, I eventually managed to get his legs out in front of him and it took 8 ppl to get him too his feet, within moments he began to look more lively and was still munching and looking at everyone as if to ask what all the fuss was about!!!!!
It then took the 8 of us to push him out of the field and into his stable, I spoke to the vet which came down last time and exlplained what had happened and that now he was up he seemed better! I was advised not to put him out in the same fields again because of the ditches and that now he'd done it twice he is likely to do it again! :? :( :?
I'm now having to put up with everyone down the yard telling me he doesn't look right and that they think he has a kidney infection, However he is going to the toilet as he always does! Am I being blind? Does anyone know much about Kidney infections etc???
Magic is now out in a different field and for a while is coming in at night to rest! Am I doing the right thing? I'm reluctant to get Scott out again for him to tell me what he did before!!! He seems fine in himself and have ridden him out (just walking) a coulpe of times since and he seems ok a little stiff but he always has been!
Not sure what to do? any suggestions would be appreciated!
Many thanks

Sel, so sorry to have missed your last post and reading this to hear about what's going on with Magic. What a shock. All I can suggest is getting a 2nd opinion from another vet, since the first vet's advice doesn't sound particularly helpful. I will also ask my mum as she usually knows lots about stuff like this! Big hug to you and Maj xxx

You poor thing - what a shock! I would definately be asking for a more thorough investigation - at least a blood test. Its unusual for a vet to not run any sort of tests. Anyway, I'm sure it'll be nothing to worry about and hope that he feels better soon. :(

Sorry to hear about your poor boy, what a fright! (two in fact!).

The vet does not seem too bothered so he obviously does not think it's something to really worry about. if money was of no matter it might be tempting to look for an explanation, perhaps through blood tests, but you know your horse and your vet best so do what you feel is right, and that may well be keep an eye and see how he goes. sounds like he's improving already and maybe you will never know what caused it???

has he been under the weather previously? my horse got cast for the first time ever recently and was very breathless when we managed to get her up, but it seemed like she'd had a virus as there was one going round and that was what made her too weak to get up.

let us know how he goes.

We agree about the blood test, better to get it done and nothing to show up on it than not doing it and regretting it
if magic is peeing allright don´t think it´s his kidneys
maybe the vet could do a urine test as well
is he eating allright?

might be a good idea to get a second opinion

Poor you Sel, what an awful shock, I hope he is ok! If you are at all worried get bloods done to be sure, but if you feel he is fine then just keep a close eye on him for a while. x

Thankyou all for your comments....... 8)

I rightly or wrongly decided to keep an eye on my boy before getting tests done (If money was no object I would have got them done but needed to weigh it up first) I decided this cus he was eating well and seemed ok once he was up and moving!

So since it happened he has been out in a flat smaller field and has been coming in each night so I knew he was getting plenty of rest! I hacked him out for the first time yesterday morning and the beast is back on top form! No sign of any stiffness and spooking at every blade of grass out on the road!!!!! :D :D I never thought I'd be so glad to get thrown about in the middle of the road by Magic pretending to be a circus Pone!!!!

He stayed out for the first time last nite and was so happy he didn't even want to come in for his breakfast this morning! although was soon persuaded by half a pack of Polos!

I have just come back from a schooling sesh and finished with a bit of grid work as there is another show on Thurs! He worked so well!! Have no doubt in my mind that he is going to be fine! full of the cheeky character I love about him!!!!! :P

Off to upload the videos now so will put the link up so you can see him back in action!!!!!!!

so glad to hear he's back on form!

i am sure you did the right thing. it;s easy to get the vet out very quickly and i'm sure if we were all rolling in money we would, but actually we know our horses best and if we own horses we often are rolling in something a lot more smelly.

when Mags got cast the lass with me was very keen for me to get the vet out. i felt almost guilty saying actually i am happy to keep an eye for now. she works at the vets and probably gets 'special' rates and has one horse. i have 3 and really can;t afford to get them out for everything ... and to be honest, as a fairly experienced horse lady now don't need to. i kept an eye, phoned and discussed with vet later and we were both happy that i would just keep a close eye..and that was all that was needed. i know my horse best - had her 14 years , i jolly well ought to!!

so sounds liek you were really on the ball and did just waht was required. give yourself a SHINEY!

more importantly what show are you aiming for with your chap?

I'm really glad he is better!

I would, however, just like to point out that I am not rolling in money (far from it), however, it is just my opinion on what I would have done in that situation. You should do what you feel is right for your horses. Obviously I have created a wrong impression of myself. :(

Gosh Claire! Sorry!
My comments weren't aimed at anyone at all or referring to any one at all! Honest!

They were more intended to reassure Sel that what ever she did was obviously ok and respond to her own comments

“I rightly or wrongly decided to keep an eye on my boy before getting tests done (If money was no object I would have got them done but needed to weigh it up first) I decided this cus he was eating well and seemed ok once he was up and moving!”

My comments about 'rolling in money' were very tongue in cheek regarding the impression many people have of us horse owners.

So sorry if offence was caused, :( it was most hugely and biggly not intended. I suspect you are rolling in poo just like me, but if you felt it was necessary would spend your last penny looking out for your horse!

Hope i am forgiven!

Perce - none caused - i think I must have just been having a hot flush  I lost one of my dogs before Christmas because I "sat back and watched" (hubby was out of work) rather than take her to the vet and I have never forgiven myself. So I suppose I am a bit over sensitive about the whole vet/no vet thing!

Anyway the main thing is that Magic is OK and looking good!

Claire! poor you!
totally understand. not over sensitive at all,
suspect you didn't 'sit back and watch' really, suspect you did what you thought would be ok at the time and unfortunately your magic looking glass into the future wasn't working. isn't hindsight a wonderful thing. if only we could bottle it and sell it we'd all be rolling in money :D

and as you rightly put it, the main thing is magic is ok.

and as for hot flushes....

perce!!

excellent! all misunderstandings sorted. :D
