Nuri has been & still is ill

Postby Raquel & Isabel on Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:07 am

Nuri has been very ill recently
Apart from her COPD, which has been quite bad, we found out yesterday that she has leptospirosis!!! :( :( :(
she´s been off colour for around a week & since last Thursday her temperture kept on going up to 40.5 C, no matter what our vet did, he did blood tests and all he could find was that her defenses were low so he told us to call in the specialists
They came yesterday, took one look at her blood test and said leptospirosis! but they´re more worried about her COPD, now we have to buy an equine haler, to squirt different inhalers up her nostrils!! that´s not going to be easy!!! :? :? :?

Hey sorry for late reply - haven't been on here for a while!! I'm not sure what leptospirosis is? Sorry she's been ill though and I hope she recovers soon. As for the COPD, I know a number of horses that using an inhaler really helps. They can be a bit tricky to start with but soon get used to the inhalers. There's also a supplement thing called Ventipulmin (sp?) which you might like to look into if you don't already know about it.

Leptospirosis is also called rat´s illness, simple explanation: it comes from when an animal (usually a rat) pees or poos on something another animal eats or drinks.
Horses can get it so can dogs and humans, cats can transmit it but not get it.
The horse has a very high temperature around 40 ºC (don´t know how much in Fahrenheit!) and don´t want to do anything, if you do a blood test all you see that the horse has very low defenses.

Nuri is a lot better now after having 3 das of pills for it. Her COPD is also a lot better cos her NAF breathing supplement has just arrived!!!.
Our vet advised us to buy an EQUINE HALER, sor of a mask to help the inhalers work better, (as Nuri rears up and is very dangerous when using an inhaler) apparently you can squirt the inhaler into it and then put it on the horse which is good (Nuri doen´t like the inhaler being squited nto her nose!)

Nuri is a lot better. We have just finished the course of pills and are keeping an eye on her just in case.
She is eating well and starting to get her energy back!!

The only thing she is having problems with, is her COPD, it is very, very, very hot over here (30ºC) and everything is very dry, there´s a lot of dust and she has some problems breathing. We are wetting her paddock but it dries in 5 minutes!!!!

The equine haler has arrived, she doen´t like it but at least we can get closer to her with it!!!. We can spray the normal inhaler in it and then put it to her nose so that´s a lot easier than putting the normal inhaler to her nose and squirting it.

We will keep posting updates.

Noe we just have to get her fat, cos she has lost at least 40kg due to stress, hoping this will be easy because she is on holiday, we have no plans to ride her for a while yet.

it´s like we say, if in the very worst case we can never ride her again, she will be a very expensive garden ornament!!!!
