Hi everyone, I thought I'd just add a couple of recent pics of Penny.

She's 14 hh and 22 years old this year and still worth her weight in gold.

I still ride her and recently did an organised ride across Dartmoor with her from Hound Tor to the Warren House Inn (you just have to end up at a Pub don't you?). I enjoy doing pleasure rides as it's great riding over unknown terrain and as the routes are planned by someone who knows the area, you just have to turn up and enjoy yourself. I have joined Endurance GB this year for the first time and hope to participate in some of the 16k (10 miles) non-competitive rides, so will see how I get on.

I also took Penny to a Torbay & District Show recently where she was entered for some fun classes with my son's partner's little girl who is 5 years old. The little girl had never ridden before and I had managed to pick up some riding kit for her at local car boot sales  however, it all fitted a treat and in we went for our first class 'pony with the biggest ears' and were placed 1st. The little girl beamed from ear to ear and went on to get a 4th rosette in another class.

Penny has done a bit of everything in her life. My daughter and I have jointly owned her for 15 years. Prior to that she was in a trekking school on dartmoor as a 5 year old and then sold to a private home for 2 years until outgrown as a 7 year old when we purchased her.

She has done all PC activities with my daughter, competed successfully at local shows in all disiplines, hunted, HT and CC and dressage. She has also produced 2 foals.

She still has the great ability to adapt to the rider and will happily go into a quiet plod for a novice child, but will move up a few gears with a more experienced rider, and still enjoys the odd gallop through our local woods.

What more could I want from or expect from my loyal friend?

Hope some of you have been as lucky with your 'friends' as I have.

Julie.

Hi Kate, Toby is not good I'm afraid. Don't know if he will ever be anything other than a pet/field companion.

When I took him to the vet I was advised to try and give him physio by walking him up and down hills to try and stretch the tendons, but was told to stop if things didn't look to be okay.

I started to give him the walks but found that he was knuckling over at the fetlock on his 'injured' leg after walking up the hill when we came to halt. I decided to stop and thought it best to leave the physio side of it until the tendon appeared to healed as much as it was probably going to, if that makes sense. As he is only rising two I felt I still have time to work on the physio before he is fully mature. Sometimes he seems more lame and at other times he is able to put more weight on the leg no problem.

I am only really concerned that he still points the leg which he finds more comfortable and that as he is still growing this could become habitual coupled with the worry that the cannon bone may not be growing at the right angle if you see what I mean.

The vet has talked about the possibility of an operation costing around £2,500 which may improve things but there are no guarantees at this stage of the outcome. It is a lot of money to spend on an unbroken 2 year old so I am going to give it a little longer and see if things start to improve, as the vet initially said it could take up to two years for him to heal properly in any case. So will have to keep you updated on his progress (or not as the case may be)!

How are your horses Kate and how big is your Toby?

Have you any recent photos of your herd?

Have you done any competing with any of them?

Speak soon.

Julie.

Their all fine thanks. Toby has been gelded now and he is currently standing at 14.3hh so is pretty big but has filled out and is looking lovely.

You may have heard as some people have and others havent that I have bought Flash. He too is standing at about 14.3 - 15hh but i havent measured him since i bought him. He is still entire but is now putting weight on and looking well.

Inca is Inca. Bless her. She went to her first show at Blackdown Hills on sunday and came 2nd in potential competition horse in hand (out of 9) and was first in the ridden class (out of 7) so was really pleased with her and she qualified for show in sept at David Brooms yard so her and Toby will be going there.

No sorry i dont have any recent pics. I will try and get some soon.

so sorry to hear Toby is not getting any better, hopefully you will be able to decide about the operation soon. Send my love to Solo. X
