hi,
thanks for all the posts. your kind wishes are appreciated. i was completed devastated by it all and still find it hard to come to terms with but time does dull the emotions so ...onwards.

just to let you all know that my mare Maggy is doing really well. my vet was thrilled and admitted he was extremely reluctant to have to undertake the surgery and very worried that she would not make it.
she was the most perfect patient (only one escape from stable - i did warn them that she may make a run for it when feeling better!) and stayed at vets for a fortnight after her surgery. i am very lucky that my vet is only a mile up the road from my yard so was able to visit her every day. she then came home to another 4 weeks complete box rest. This was followed by another 3 weeks where we built up from 2 half hour limited grass turnouts per day until the big day when i decided she was ready to stay out 24 hours. she has not put a foot wrong throughout her recovery and has reinforced for me why i love her so much and made the decision to go for the surgery. Not bad for a horse who usually lives out 24/7.

I think i am far more emotionally affected by the loss of our foal than she is. may be that's a good thing really. she seems fine and is starting to look much better now she is eating grass again.
she is presentlyout with her old gentleman, Tidy, and this morning cantered over to see me when i arrived at the yard - or was it the large carrot i had hidden in my pocket she was after.

maggy is an absolute sweetheart. she became a real favourite at the vets and will now live out her days as a rather expensive, useless pet!! can't ride her! can't breed from her! eats and poos like an elephant! bloomin' horses!

her daughter Ellie took my full attention throughout the (so called) summer as i concentrated on getting her going at long last whilst taking my mind off things (poor Ellie!). The day that Mags was to go out ellie and i were to compete in our first dressage test, and my first for about 8 years! i got to the yard at 6.30 am and guess what - one swollen hock and we were going nowhere. so Mags is out and Ellie is in! (6 weeks box rest) Did i say 'bloomin' horses!'

It is only my horses' lovely nature that makes me beat the wish to give it all up right now!! not that i'd be able to sell the old crocks if i wanted to!!!

thanks again for your kind comments. wishing you all far better luck with your horses than i seem to be having with mine!

why life can be so cruel to people who love & care so much i ll always struggle to understand Sad Rolling Eyes , but i strongly believe everything happends for a reason Rolling Eyes .
i just think the way you ve dealt with it all is so inspiring and it puts back into perspective all lifes little disappointments when you can cope with such horrible things & maintain your sense of humour Cool .........i take my hat off to you ......you have my full respect & admiration Wink Very Happy
