Our Knabbbie fewspot Vixen had her 18 th foal last night. I am totally in awe of this mare.
She is 23, been pregnant 20 times with 18 live foals and is also broken to ride & drive. She has left a legacy of Knabstruppers & all credit to her breeder Niels Meinert Larson. Two years ago when she went to vet hospital, her foal was sick, the very experienced vet asked if it was her first foal and was astounded to learn it was her 16th. Hope you don't mind me rambling on
This time she has given us a wonderful fewspot colt by our Knab stallion Pinocchio.

Not sure - big decision. I will wait until just before her first full season & then have her checked out as we do each year. The vet says she is like an eight year old. She loves the foals, she gets in foal first try, she foals really easily , last night one long slow push , whole labour 15 mins total & out he plopped.
Urhhh I don't know. A lot can happen in the next few weeks. I guess it will be up to Vixen and how she is looking/feeling.

Congratulations and WOW what a mare....
See looks extemely well, are you sure she hasn't been swopped at sometime
You have got to respect a track record like that haven't you - the foal looks cracking, she certainly has done him well.

Maybe she was swapped
If she was a woman she would be one of those lucky ones that spring back into shape straight after giving birth. We do make lots of jokes about her & her post foaling fitness regime she does walk a heck of a lot. The next couple of days she will walk round the field whilst also disciplining foalie quite hard to stay with her. You never see Vixen chasing a foal round the field - they always follow her. Very funny compared with some of my other foal fraught mares

Wow what a wonder-mare! And what a fantastic colt to give you by your own boy - beautiful!
I've spoken to many different vets and experienced breeders most of whom agree that when a mare is ready to give up breeding she will - they say as long as she is still holding her condition, still coping ok with the labour, and getting in foal easily then they're still going strong!

I did know of a broodie that was 26 when she was put down after weaning her last foal. Up until that point she raced as a 2 and 3 year old, and then went to stud. She bred every year and only 2 didn't make it past the first month. She bred a stallion called Cadaux Generaux, who is still standing at stud today aged about 22yrs?? (Once his stud fee was £25,000). However, she did look like she was old and had a complete 'pot belly'. Your mare looks fantastic!!

Thanks all
That is good to hear Sarah. She seems to be doing really well so maybe...
R&M that mare is amazing too and looks like she passed her longevity onto the stallion. I recognise his name. Off to look him up.
