As far as I know a TB can not be registered with Weatherbys if he/she is a 'roan'. However, you can by-pass this claim by stating the term 'ticking' (a solid coat colour, normally brown or chestnut with grey hairs throughout ). This is something that my mare appears to have!
*Grey is the result of a dominant gene that will mask all other colours
*Grey bred to grey will produce 75% grey (unless one parent is homozygous)
*A homozygous grey will produce 100% grey and will have 2 grey parents

Sorry if ive repeated anything that someone has said before Cool
I have a book called 'horse colour explained' by Jeanette Gower so if I can be of any assistance and look up anything that is within my capabilities about any colour and genetics (god help me) I will try to do my best!! Confused Confused Shocked Shocked Very Happy Very Happy Question

Do you know where your boy was foaled? If it was at a TB stud his foal record should state what colour he is! (stud hands are amazing and seem to know what colour they are before the horse does!)

without joining the very challenging grey genetic colouring discussion, just have to add that we have had 2 grey mares, both IDxTBs, one with a lot of white and a white mane & tail and the other darker and more dappled with black M&T. I think they are both stunning and and am a real grey fan.

Mischa (our current grey) has had a dun, a steel grey, a dark bay and our current bright bay foal. We have asked her to produce a coloured foal this year, so will have to see what she manages.

Give it up for greys Very Happy especially when getting ready for shows Sad

Yep, but I think some judges are quite kind as they appreciate just what you have gone through.

RIght, fingers crossed they come out. Here are the photos of my boy. As I said, he's a little fugly at the moment as his muscle development is in all the wrong places. But I think will a few months hard work he'll be a different horse.

Grey, Grey, Grey, - nice boy!!! I agree once he has had a summer on good grass and work he will muscle up beautifully. I'd expect him to stay a dark grey for quite some time and go white gradually (so not so bad for keeping clean!)

You are all so experenced at this now... Inca is down in her passport as being A GREY ROAN, i think she is GREY, she has some brown flex in her coat. Her Dad was grey and Mum was Bay..

See what you think

i m far from the most experienced on here ! Embarassed Embarassed Rolling Eyes but i m determined to learn as much as i can about recognising grey in all its forms SLOW greying being the most over looked Confused
in my opinion she s GREY as her head has Greyed the brown flecks you are seeing are whats left of her birth colour (i think you mentioned she was Bay at birth GREYS are usually born darker & lighten where as other foals are usually born a shade lighter & darken to thier adult colour )in true roans the head remains solid and if there are markings to the head(star , blaze etc) these remain true .where as in a GREYthe head is one of the first parts to lighten (a telltale sign is white hairs encircling the eyes often refered to as "GOOGLES") the colour around the markings gradualy lightens until the markings that were once obvious vertually disappear , a memory of a blaze /stripe /snipe etc may be left as pink skin in the muzzle ( speed at which this happends will vary ......as Laura mentioned depending on if the GREY is HOMOZYGOUS /fast greying or HETERZYGOUS /slow greying .......i am partically interested in this as the speed at which both BILLY & BAMBA have greyed would sugest HE/SHE is/was HOMOZYGOUS Confused Shocked Shocked which is puzzling Confused but when the DNA test is available i ll have that tested , in a way i d rather him be HOMOZYGOUS for Grey then people will be sure that whatever colour thier foal is born that be it slowly or rapidly it WILL turn GREY! Cool )as i understand it but someone more up on colour genetics may baffle me with science & disagree! Embarassed Rolling Eyes ( i m not into all the high tech algebra stuff! Embarassed Laughing )the main difference between ROAN & GREY is ROAN is non progressive .....BUT .....GREY will continue to progress untill all pigment has disapeared (but then it gets mega complicated greys can rgain pigment i.e FLEABITTEN GREYS andthese marks can vary in size Shocked it started to be visable in Bamb before she died and i took photos of the replgmentation and asked Shiela Archer about them ....she said this repigmentation was commonly seen in Greys ...if anyone is interested i ll happily post those photos on this thread but i won t bore you with them if your not! Laughing Laughing )
hope this helped Confused .....if only by sending you to sleep! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
