Iam no expert here but after nearly 3 hours and i don't think foal has had any milk yet - what next? - Is this a vet thing now or more patience required from 'the team'?

You just know that Matilda will just spread her legs and get on with it don't you - if she stays awake long enough!

I can't remember the time frame of the foal getting the colostreum (however you spell it - if I've got the right word) but I know that they can milk the mare (probably sedate her) if foal desperately needs it and can't get it

Needs to get in her/him within 18/24 hours before the ability to absorb it naturally shuts down then you have to give it intravenously. So plenty of time -but would be nice to see him/her drink and poo!

Without wanting to sound negative, sometimes the motherly instinct doesn't kick in if the mare knows there is something wrong with the foal. I suppose in the wild a foal not having stood for several hours wouldn't stand much of a chance. Hoping that doesn't sound too harsh.

She doesn't seem interested in baby, I hope the motherly instinct kicks in soon. She is only young herself i saw on her profile she was born in 2006 so is only just 3 i don't know but maybe that has something to do with it

I get where you're coming from but last year Twinks (Jem's foal) was born with contracted tendons and we struggled with him for ages trying to get him to stand, there was a time-frame of something like 6hrs to get him to stand before he would need vet attention - luckily everything worked out fine, anyway Jem was very foal-proud and interested in her foal despite his problems. I think Sammi's attitude is more of a maiden mare thing, might be wrong though but I hope I'm not!
